It’s All About the Words

Word choice is the key to all communication and there are a myriad of choices. We have become so accustomed to using the same words over and over again that they become mundane . They don’t accurately convey the message we desperately want to communicate. It could be a text, email, essay, or book. Perhaps it’s a speech or just a conversation. We’re always on the search for the right words that will provide not only clarity, but the emotion behind the words. I’ve begun to make word and phrase lists that are unfamiliar to me in my daily use of language. How exciting and gratifying to discover the perfect words for what I’m thinking and feeling. And, the bonus is the sounds the words make when said aloud whether they’re soft and melodic, harsh, or melancholy. A symphony of sounds to create any mood. Take a Danish word like “hygge” pronounced “hyoo-guh”. It sounds harsh, but actually means the opposite: cozy and comfortable. Then there’s “apricity” which sounds light and delicate and means warmth of the sun on a cold day. The pronunciation of apricity, “a-PRIS-i-tee truly captures that feeling of warmth. How about the Swedish idiom, “Kart besvar” pronounced “shairt bessvair” meaning a nuisance or pain but you’re grateful for it. An example is having a root canal. You may hate the procedure, but grateful it can save your tooth. These are just a few examples. I’m sure you have many favorites to share with in the comments. Remember, it’s all about the words, bout the words.
